What Is Dining Out for Life?
Dining Out for Life is an annual dining fundraising event that raises money for AIDS service organizations across the country. Since 1991, Dining Out for Life has been produced by HIV/AIDS service organizations in order to raise funds for their local communities.
For one night of the year we encourage all Houstonians to Dine Out and Fight AIDS!
A portion of the proceeds from Dining Out for Life help support AFH’s programs and services that support thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS here in our community. Participating restaurants have the option of donating 25 percent of sales or a flat fee of $2,000. Each restaurant's listing on the national Dining Out For Life website indicates how it chose to give.
|Why Chefs Support Dining Out For Life...
AIDS Foundation Houston's (AFH) tenth year as a participant in the nationwide Dining Out for Life fundraiser was a huge success. Thanks to our sponsors, participating restaurants, co-chairs, hosts, volunteers, diners, and donors, much needed funds were raised to support AFH programs and services that support thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS in our community.

Special nutritional needs of those living with HIV/AIDS
HIV can alter the body’s metabolism, as well as its ability to absorb nutrients. In order for the body to effectively fight the disease, it requires more calories. According to the World Food Programme, an HIV-positive adult can require up to 30% more calories than the average adult and an HIV-positive child can require anywhere from 50-100% more calories when compared to HIV-negative children. Many of the anti-retroviral medications required to manage the disease should be taken with food and can cause severe illness when taken on an empty stomach. A lack of access to adequate food can often result in an HIV-positive person not adhering to their medication regimen to avoid illness.
